This series will introduce you to a member of team Exacta every month, so you can meet the dedicated hardworking team that has made Exacta what it is today. Our twelfth instalment of the series introduces you to Tom Bishop. Tom began working at Exacta just over a year and a half ago. Tom is a Product Development Engineer; this means that he works alongside the product development team to design new systems, create prototypes using CAD software, 3D print functional prototypes, and test new solutions.
How long have you been at Exacta and tell us about your job role?
I’ve been working at Exacta for around 19 months now. My job role for the first 18 months was working in Test & Config, recently I have moved departments into a Product Development role. In my new role as Product Development Engineer, I help design chassis, as well as research and conceptualize new designs that we could utilise.
What do you enjoy most about working at Exacta?
I love being around computers and being near the latest tech! I also really enjoy researching and creating solutions for our customers.
What do you enjoy doing in your free time?
In my free time I like to spend time with my family. I have a wife, a daughter, and a cat. We tend to go for long walks at the weekend and enjoy going out for coffee and lunch.
What advice would you give to younger generations who aspire to work in the STEM industry/want the same job role as you?
Get some experience working in the environment that you’d like to work in. Something I failed to do whilst studying at university was doing my year in industry. This really put a downer on trying to find companies that would hire me as I didn’t have any practical experience. If you have that time in a work environment that’s relevant to your future career, it does really help when looking for a job.
What three items would you take with you to a deserted island?
I’m not staying on the island! I was a sailor, so I’d probably take a sailboat, with food and water. And then go home! I’m not staying there!
What are 3 characteristics that best describe you as a person?
Shy, thoughtful, and happy.
