What is Pride? 🌈

Pride is celebrated throughout the month of June every year, the month is dedicated to celebrating love, friendship, acceptance, equality & celebrating LGBTQ+ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer) communities across the globe. It is a time to reflect and celebrate how far the rights for the LGBTQ+ community have come in recent years but to also highlight how there is still much work to be done. Throughout the month people come together to remember all the work that has been done and the history of the LGBTQ+ community finding acceptance in the world, it is a time where people can celebrate their individuality. The month is usually celebrated with colourful, joyous parades, concerts, marches, workshops etc.  

PRIDE is a holiday all about being proud of who you are as a person no matter who you love.

Why is it important? 🌈

Pride is celebrated in June as this marks the anniversary of the Stonewall riots in 1969 and is acknowledged as the birthplace of the modern gay liberation movement. This was the first time that queer communities fought back against police raids on the city’s gay bars/clubs and marks a huge change for gay rights for many people within the community.  

Pride Month is a celebration of how far we have come but it also calls us to stand up against the suffering and victimisation that the LGBTQ+ community still endures today. There are still 69 countries that have laws that criminalise homosexuality, this shows we still have a long way to go.

Pride month continues to be more important than ever, both to support the community and educate the wider society about how detrimental homophobia, biphobia, and transphobia are to all of us. Our freedom, rights and protection are something that should never be taken for granted and is why allies and role models are needed both inside and outside of the community to stand in unison and continue the fight and push for equality.

Here at Exacta Technologies, we understand the importance of standing in solidarity with the LGBTQ+ community and to show our support for the community we have changed our LinkedIn banners for the entirety of June in honour of Pride Month. We are aware that our support for the LGBTQ+ community shouldn’t just be for 1 month in the year, it should be year-round and here at Exacta we continuously work towards a diverse and inclusive workforce, where our employees feel valued and safe no matter their gender or sexuality.
